Coach Jack Schugars is a highly respected figure in the world of football, known for his exceptional coaching skills and unwavering dedication to his players. Born and raised in Muskegon, Michigan, Jack developed a passion for the sport at a young age and went on to make a significant impact on the football community throughout his career.
Family Life:
Jack Schugars was married to his beloved wife, Julie, for 49 years until her passing. Together, they raised two children who have continued the family’s tradition of excellence. His son Eric followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a teacher and the Head Football Coach at Traverse City Central High School. Eric’s wife, Carissa, is an integral part of their family. Jack’s daughter, Amanda, also pursued a career in education as a 2nd-grade teacher at Marshall Public Schools. Amanda’s husband, Matt, C.E.O. Boys and Girls Club of Kalamazoo, completes their family circle. Jack is a proud grandfather to six grandchildren, who undoubtedly bring him immense joy and pride.
Teaching Experience:
Jack Schugars dedicated an impressive 39 years of his life to teaching biology at Oakridge High School in Muskegon, Michigan. His passion for education went hand in hand with his love for coaching, as he inspired countless students both in the classroom and on the football field.
Coaching Experience:
Coach Schugars’ coaching journey began in 1969 when he took on the role of Head Football Coach at Oakridge Middle School, where he experienced early success with a record of 18-5-1. Over the next few years, he continued to make his mark as the Junior Varsity Head Football Coach at Oakridge from 1973 to 1975, amassing a record of 18-7-2.
In 1976, Jack advanced to the position of Varsity Assistant Coach at Oakridge High School, where he contributed to the development of the team for three seasons, finishing with a record of 13-14. However, it was in 1979 that he truly left his mark as he was appointed Head Football Coach at Oakridge High School, a position he held for an impressive 32 years until his retirement in 2010.
Throughout his tenure as Head Coach, Coach Schugars achieved remarkable success, leading his team to a record of 262 wins and 78 losses. His dedication and strategic approach to coaching resulted in numerous accolades, including 19 West Michigan Conference Championships and 20 Michigan High School Playoff qualifications. Jack’s teams also secured 7 District Championships and 6 Regional Championships.
The pinnacle of Coach Schugars’ career came with three Michigan High School State Championships, clinched in 1997, 2005, and 2008. Additionally, his teams reached the State Runner-Up position in 1990 and 2003, solidifying his reputation as a formidable coach in the state.
Organizational Involvement:
Beyond his coaching achievements, Jack Schugars actively participated in various organizations related to football and community service. He served on the Board of Directors for the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association from 1981 to 2010, and in 1998, he was elected President of the association.
Coach Schugars dedicated 20 years as the Equipment Chair for the MHSFCA All-Star Game, contributing to the success of this prestigious event. His involvement extended to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). Moreover, he lent his support to the Old Newsboys/Goodfellows organization, highlighting his commitment to giving back to the community.
Present (2011 – Now):
In 2011, Coach Jack Schugars embarked on a new chapter of his coaching career by becoming the Fellowship of Christian Athletes team chaplain for the Grand Rapids Community College Football team. He brought his guidance, wisdom, and spiritual support to the players, creating a positive and uplifting environment within the team. Additionally, he served as a Special Teams advisor, sharing his expertise in this crucial aspect of the game.
From 2012 to 2017, Coach Schugars joined the coaching staff at Ferris State University Football as the Special Teams Coordinator. His contributions to the team were invaluable, as he played a vital role in shaping the success of the program during his tenure.
In 2017, Coach Schugars expanded his coaching endeavors by taking on the position of Special Teams Assistant at Traverse City Central High School. Working alongside his son, Eric Schugars, who was the Head Football Coach at the school, Jack brought his wealth of experience and knowledge to the team, providing guidance and support in the specialized area of special teams.
From 2018 to 2023, Coach Schugars continued his coaching journey as an Assistant Coach at Traverse City Central High School, focusing on the special teams unit. Working alongside his son Eric, the team achieved impressive results with a record of 67-21, including 6 out of 7 Big North Conference championships, 2 regional championships, and 3 district championships.
Simultaneously, Coach Schugars maintained his involvement with Ferris State University from 2018 to 2023, serving as a Special Teams Position Coach. He contributed to the team’s remarkable success under the leadership of Head Coach Tony Annese, as they reached the pinnacle of NCAA Division 2 football. In 2018, Ferris State University was the national runner-up, and they followed it up with back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. The team’s outstanding record of 115 wins and 17 losses during this period is a testament to the collective efforts of the coaching staff, including Coach Schugars.
